cholecystectomy

A cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder, typically because of gallstones. Gallstones are hard deposits that form in the gallbladder, which is a small organ located beneath the liver that stores bile.

The two types of cholecystectomy procedures are:

  1. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy: In this procedure, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen and uses a laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera) and specialized tools to remove the gallbladder.
  2. Open cholecystectomy: In this procedure, the surgeon makes a large incision in the abdomen and removes the gallbladder through the opening.

Both procedures typically require general anesthesia and are considered safe with low risk of complications. Recovery time varies depending on the individual and the type of procedure performed, but most patients can return to normal activities within a few weeks.
